The temperature of your water could be the reason for your greasy hair.

Ever wondered why a salon-fresh wash seems to stay pristine for days while at-home efforts seem to fall flat almost immediately? Well, you're not alone. It's a common conundrum that leaves many scratching their heads, trying to unearth the hairdresser's magic touch.

A hairstylist has now revealed the real reason our self-washes don't quite measure up. Melody posted an enlightening video on TikTok, divulging the "hair wash secrets" that make all the difference.

Her revelations included three pivotal mistakes we tend to make in our own bathrooms – and one surprising factor is the heat setting of your shower.

In her clip, she revealed: "You want to know why it takes so long for salon-washed hair to get oily again? Well, let me tell you the top three mistakes people make when washing their hair."

Not shampooing correctly

It's enticing to dump a generous amount of shampoo at the crown and mash your tresses into a sudsy nest, vigorously working in the product. But, as Melody points out, this method aggravates split ends and leads to drier locks.

Her advice was to concentrate shampoo at the scalp and avoid the ends entirely. Simply rinsing your shampoo allows it to trickle down and cleanse the tips of your hair without any extra effort.

She stated: "Hairdressers know that shampoo is made for the scalp, not the ends of the hair. We don't give head massages just to relax you. We are trying to cleanse the scalp of dirt and oil so it doesn't get oily fast and stays healthy.

"At home, you should massage the shampoo all over your scalp, don't touch the ends and just rinse it. Do two rounds of shampoo - one to clean product build-up and one to clean the scalp - your hair will be the cleanest it can be."

Not emulsifying shampoo

Melody also highlighted the significance of emulsifying shampoo before applying it to the scalp. This involves adding a bit of water to the shampoo and rubbing it in your hands to create a lather which ensures an even and thorough application.

Moreover, Melody drew attention to selecting the proper shampoo, emphasizing that caring for the scalp translates to healthier hair. A suitable shampoo that cleanses and nourishes the scalp is crucial to extend the period between washes and keep the hair grease-free.

Using hot water

The expert also warned of the potential damage from using too hot water for washing hair. According to her, hairdressers generally avoid hot water to prevent damage, advising people to wash their hair with lukewarm or cold water instead.

Not only can this help tackle grease caused by poor scalp health, but it can also reduce frizz and prevent your cuticles from opening and splitting.

Switching to warm water showers can also have benefits for your skin. Not using hot water has been linked to reduced dryness and less irritation, as well as improved skin hydration - and it's better for those with sensitive skin, too.
