A tale of two companies…He walked out with his head down, frustrated. How could this be so hard?It was the third time he departed that store in failure. But little did he know, he had another week of frustration ahead of him.He had no idea how many unanswered calls or one-directional messages lay in store. When the final straw came, he was actually relieved.—————————————————————“Wow, this store looks quite a bit different than the last.” he thought. The layout was well-designed, the walls highlighted available services, and seating was comfortable. When it was his turn, he was greeted with a smile. The workers were kind, organized, and efficient. They checked in on each other and offered assistance and input. After a small child entered the store full of restless energy, a worker opened his drawer, walked over to the child, and handed out a piece of candy. As the man walked out of the store, he hadn’t yet achieved his goal, but he had confidence things would work out.—————————————————————How can two companies, in the same industry, be so different?Does your work environment encourage hospitality?Do interactions lead to trust and inspire others? Are your colleagues happy?Do they help each other?Culture is powerful.〽️#workenvironment #culture #leadership

Empowering Growth and Innovation | Pioneering Operations | Nationwide Navigator | Transforming Challenges into Opportunities

🚀 Problem-Solving in Action: Ensuring Smooth Store Openings Despite Unexpected Challenges 🚀In the fast-paced world of operations, challenges are inevitable. One particular area where we frequently encountered obstacles was during store openings. Each turnover day brought its own set of surprises, despite these hurdles, our commitment to ensuring the openings were on time from the operations end never wavered. The Challenge: Every time we showed up on turnover day, there were unexpected issues that threatened to delay the opening. We faced situations like:Awaiting permits.Unfinished electrical work.Incomplete equipment installation.Missing smallwares. Our Solution: We learned to quickly pivot and find creative solutions to these obstacles rather than succumbing to them. Here’s how we did it:1. Adaptability and Innovation:Training in Unconventional Spaces: When training spaces were unavailable, we used hotel conference rooms and even set up makeshift bars out of counters.Technology and Engagement: We leveraged technology to play learning games and integrated fun activities into our training sessions to keep the team engaged despite the construction happening around us.2. Collaboration and Flexibility:Shared Spaces: We shared spaces with construction crews, coordinating closely to ensure both teams could work effectively.Improvised Solutions: When equipment was missing or incomplete, we found creative ways to simulate real-world scenarios.3. Empowerment and Motivation:Team Empowerment: We motivated and empowered our team, ensuring they knew they were capable of overcoming any challenge.Positive Reinforcement: Regular encouragement and positive reinforcement helped maintain high morale and commitment. The Outcome: Despite the numerous challenges, our ability to adapt and innovate ensured that our store openings were successful and on time. This experience reinforced the importance of resilience, creativity, and teamwork in overcoming obstacles.I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved and grateful for the hardworking teams that made it all possible. Together, we turned challenges into opportunities for growth and success.#ProblemSolving #OperationsManagement #Innovation #Teamwork #Leadership #ContinuousImprovement

🌟 Employee Spotlight: Meet Lee, Our Employee of the Quarter! 🌟Congratulations to Lee, our Employee of the Quarter! We're so proud of how he upholds our company's core values of #integrity, #community, #teamwork, #happiness, #innovative, and #safety. We sat down with Lee to learn more about his role at the company and what these values mean to him:Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your role within Southern Ice Cream?A: "By myself, I’m a people person. People notice that. I love to make people smile. My job isn’t hard; it’s just cold. As for my job, I love and respect the people and keep up the good work. We all try to work together [office and drivers]."Q: Congratulations on winning Employee of the Quarter! How does it feel to be recognized for your dedication to our company's core values?A: "It’s very appreciative, trust me, because other people work hard and deserve it. It’s a good feeling, a good thing. I always notice people appreciate it, and it’s good to get that recognition."Q: Safety is paramount in everything we do. How do you ensure that safety protocols are followed in your day-to-day work, and how do you promote a culture of safety among your peers?A: "Safety first comes from being aware of your surroundings. Like you know, forklifts and pallet jacks. And also, coming in and out of the freezer, there's a blind spot, so you want people to know when you’re coming through. I tell people when I’m coming out because I almost ran into Jeff yesterday. You just have to be aware of forklifts and pallet jacks moving."Q: Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations within our company, and how do you plan to continue upholding our core values in your work?A: "Well, the goal is to keep an open communication with upper management and my team. That way, we can all be successful at our jobs. With the core values, those are things that come naturally to me. I don’t necessarily have to work on them; they come naturally to me."

What do you do with the slowest work day on the planet? You do Spring Cleaning in January! Today we really got back to basics! Dusted our entire store top to bottom, tore our stockroom apart just to rearrange it because: why not? What will tomorrow hold - perfection of the little things! Our goal is to create new habits during the slower business moments so that when everything speeds back up we can handle it all in stride. #springcleaning #backtobasics #skechers

Here’s a hard lesson I learned during my extensive business journey: You cannot legislate a corporate culture. It results from leadership principles that are core to the company and inform corporate behaviors in the marketplace and how a company treats its team members and customers. It is the icing on a corporate cake. If the cake is made well, it becomes a thing of beauty. If the cake is not made well, then the corporate culture is, in fact, hollow. Take Kinko’s (eventually FedEx Office), for instance. Paul Orfalea installed an initiative that proved the culture wasn't just about directives from the top but empowering every team member to contribute and be recognized. Let’s say a team member named Bertha Kirkpatrick was head of the mail room, which means she was in charge of disseminating information to twelve hundred separate stores and fielding all the questions that stores might have about communication topics. Suppose Bertha had an idea for a digital newsletter that each store would receive on Mondays. The newsletter would not only lay out big topics for that week but also provide a calendar that would help individual stores plan and staff for coming events. In the world of Kinko’s, that newsletter would become a reality, and the title would be The Bertha Kirkpatrick Weekly Information Newsletter. Guess what happens to Bertha for the rest of her career at Kinko’s? When Bertha walks into a room, people know they are in the presence of someone who has genuinely impacted their daily work life. Not only does Bertha feel seen and appreciated, but the company team members have a clear example of Kinko’s appreciation and respect for them. Each year at its annual convention, Kinko’s would announce top new initiatives by team members, along with the name of the new idea, which always incorporated the name of the person who conceived it. One more incredible idea from Kinko’s: The stores couldn’t afford to have janitorial services come in to clean the restrooms, so the rule was the newest employee had to clean restrooms until the next new employee showed up. And guess what? If you were a new store manager who got promoted and moved to a different Kinko’s store, you had to clean the restrooms as anyone else would until there was a newer team member than you! Those are examples of outputs from a healthy culture where the team members felt heard and that they were part of a team, all buying into a corporate vision. This journey through the intricacies of corporate culture is just a slice of the wisdom I've gathered over the years. In a world where surveys consistently show that shoppers prioritize a clean and safe environment over even the most competitive pricing, we understand that cleanliness isn't just a necessity—it's a business strategy.

🎉🎉CONGRATULATIONS!! Our team does it again! 🎉🎉Why Cleanliness is Your Business’s Competitive EdgeA clean facility isn’t just a luxury—it’s the difference between thriving and barely surviving in today’s competitive market. Customers consistently choose cleanliness over price when deciding where to spend their money. We’re proud to share this picture of a floor our team recently renewed, bringing it back to its shiny, clean, and new state. This transformation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team. They invest the time and effort because they know their great work not only secures future business for us but also helps our customers increase their profits by creating a welcoming and safe environment.Consider these insights from a Procter & Gamble Professional survey:91% of customers are more likely to have an overall negative opinion of a business if it isn't clean.95% believe that cleanliness can elevate a good business into a great one.88% express concern for their safety in a dirty environment.74% are willing to overlook customer service issues if the business is noticeably clean.Don’t let your competitors outshine you. Don’t let your customers become their loyal customers. Be the clean, safe location that customers are searching for.

This article from Mark Belko provides an insightful perspective on Downtown Pittsburgh's evolving landscape and I can’t agree more. Downtown has plenty of positives to talk about and foot traffic to back it up.It effectively highlights the resilience and optimism of local businesses amidst challenges related to safety and vacancies. Focusing on the positive aspects, such as the inherent value seen by businesses in maintaining a downtown presence (retail/restaurants/offices), the article underscores a hopeful outlook for the area's future development and prosperity.#downtownpittsburgh #retailrealestate #officespace #pittsburgh
